Journey
Having done the same trip to La Tania with a group of friends for the last three years, it was almost default mode to end up looking at flights when trying to book for this year. Between Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble you would think it would be easy to find a couple of flights that would allow everybody in our group to meet `up at a similar time and take a transfer to the resort together. The long string of Facebook messages and texts would suggest otherwise!
When we eventually tried to book the flights it is always disheartening to see the price of the ‘cheap’ fare spiral out of control when you click on ‘add bag’ and ‘add ski equipment’. I know it will happen but it always seems to come as a surprise for some reason! With all the struggles we were having, we thought we should have a quick look at alternatives. We are so glad we did!!
Although the initial price of the Eurostar may look significantly more than a flight, when you break down the costs of getting to the airport, adding luggage and a transfer on the other end, the train prices become a lot more competitive and attractive. The added bonus of being able to choose our seats together and carry on all our skis and luggage for free sold it for us!!
Having never been on the Eurostar before, the whole experience felt exciting and a great way to start the holiday. No long queues at check-in and straight through to the departure, the experience was very different to flying. Being able to sit together and move about, we were in Moutiers in no time. With the connecting bus from the station waiting a short walk from the train, it was a quick ride up the hill to the resort.
We had a fantastic week on the slopes. The Three Valleys never seems to disappoint with such a vast ski area. The one thing that was said by all at the end of our trip however was wouldn’t it be nice if we had an extra day of skiing. We will definitely be trying the overnight train next year to sneak in a couple of extra days!
